Remote Sensing and Geospatial Sciences Group

Remote sensing is the process of detecting and monitoring the physical characteristics of an area by measuring its reflected and emitted radiation at a distance (typically from satellite or aircraft). The study of Geospatial Sciences research the scientific principles that Geographic Information Systems are based upon. These include considerations such as spatial and temporal data management, analysis, modelling and visualisation.

The Group conducts a diverse range of both pure and applied Remote Sensing and Geospatial sciences research using state-of-the-art remote sensing and geospatial technologies, such as, GRACE, TRMM, Landsat, ASRER, MODIS, SPOT satellite systems, laser scanning (terrestrial and mobile), photogrammetry and space time data mining. These have a variety of practical applications in environmental monitoring, heritage conservation and archaeology, urban planning and transport, mining, and hydrology.
